You will never get it right...

I bought a nasal aspirator. Before taking my son for his 10 week immunisations, I checked to see whether I had the correct folder with all his details my wife had so efficiently filed away. Nodding my head and smiling that I had in fact found what I needed, a pamphlet fell out which the paediatrician had handed me on our first visit, advertising an aspirator. Seeing as our baby boy does have congestion issues from time to time, I picked up the ad and read the text, wondering whether this item really worked. The image again raised concern in my mind because even though the simple design of mouthpiece, clear tube and cylinder on the end seemed practical enough, it still looked like something you'd buy in a sex shop. That aside, I YouTubed the thing and was amazed to see how effective it was. The reviews were good. So, after his shots (God, I hate needles) I went out and got one. He is now so at ease that five-hour sleeping sessions have become the norm. Well, not all the time. ...

Learn to listen...

My wife understands baby talk. Whether a groan, squeak, niggle, cry, scream or even just the flapping of arms, she knows exactly what our son needs. I don't. With me, it's a process of elimination: feed me, burp me, change me, smile at me, play with me or put my dummy back in my mouth. And very often it is all of the above, just not in that order. It is usually a case of feed me, burp me, feed me, smile at me, burp me, feed me some more, and finally, clean my bottom. When writing, I have a similar situation, and that because my characters are always based on people I have met at one stage or another. We have conversations, negotiations, and lay out a general list of actions to be taken. Most of the time they would say, " You want me to do what? " In real life, the average human being is driven by the primal instinct to survive. Whether creating a safety net for those within their bubble, working towards that promotion or mending bridges to achieve emotional p...

There's always a story...

After my last post, I am happy to announce that I finally found my story, and it wasn't under the bed. With reference to the blog I mentioned previously, I continue along the lines that a writer's blog should have writery things, and if at all possible, writery things within your own genre. So I am going to try and explain my reason for writing romance. I did not wake up one day deciding to be a writer, followed by extensive market research on which genres sold well and brought authors the highest return for their hard work. You see, that was the last thing on my mind. Growing up and based on what I read, I was more of a fantasy and supernatural kind of guy with the likes of Tolkien, Koontz, King and Asimov filling my book shelf. I was also always interested in Arthur and the knights of the round table. Only after I decided to seriously put pen to paper was I drawn to the previously unmentioned world of romance. At the time the idea of my first book prodded me in the rib...

Doors, and how they sometimes open before you knock...

December 31st was my last post. And thank goodness it didn't have a shopping list of resolutions I know I wouldn't have been able to keep. As strange as it may sound, since that date I have done so much yet nothing. A new job in a different industry kept me busy, and after being self-employed for many years it was a huge change. As a result, time usually spent writing was now needed to recover from the rat race. But, like a true writer, I observed character traits and managed to outline two book ideas from the people I met. Some hilarious, some like sheep following a lost shepherd, and others ending up on a hit list that will definitely be offed before the end of the story. Yet, I haven't written much. Wandering in a literary desert gave me time to reflect on my writing and where I want it to go. Writing has always been an escape for me, a way to rationalise the world outside and the question of where I am going in life. Last year I lost, and then I found: mysel...

A Time For Giving...

Image
Christmas. A time of year when everybody gears up to spend and create memorable moments with friends and family. Gifts are presented and usually judged by the amount spent, the store name that appears on the receipt, or even whether the gadget bought is not too outdated or ‘uncool.’ But after all the curve balls life throws at us, maybe we should go back to the basics. Christmas is a time of giving and receiving, yes…but of ourselves and not our cards to swipe. Love. It makes the world go around, they say. It also makes us blind, others murmur. To me…it is a circle of life. We are born, wide-eyed and helpless, needing to be loved for the sake of survival. And as the years go by and we age, there is actually not much difference. We build castles and surround ourselves with items of beauty, but often fail to see the most precious gift that can ever be bestowed on any one person… …love… So as the year draws to a close, I look back at the weeks and m...

BIG 5 may soon become BIG 4...

I once again shed light on the problem of rhino poaching in Africa that threatens the continued existence of these beautiful beasts. With today being World Rhino Day, it helps us reflect on what we are turning a blind eye to. If there is a fuel hike…we petition and threaten to burn down the fuel plants…If McD’s delivers a shoddy product, we boycott them…and so on. But as we sit in our comfy recliners, drinking a glass of red or white… why should we care, right? Wrong…   The decline of the rhino will reduce grazing land, which will also lead to the decline of the gazelle, antelope and zebra. And if these animals die out, so will lions and leopards. Can you picture a world where your children, or grandchildren, never get to see any of these animals . . . either in a zoo or on the Nature Channel? Not only will this change the savannah, but it will ultimately reduce tourism and lead to fewer jobs in a country already battling with unemployment. The stats are everywh...

In a world of writing, we are often inspired by a mood, a memory, or even a dream. And then when we least expect it, we are consumed by a need to stand up and make our voices heard. Well, a few months ago this happened to me…   A very close friend told me a story of how she would stare at an image from a webcam positioned at a watering hole in the middle of Africa, watching as the wild animals mulled around in an existence that most of us didn’t understand or weren’t aware of. She had never left her home town never mind her state, yet here she sat dreaming of walking on the hot, dry sand that was far from her reach. It made her long to be there, and made me smile that someone could feel passionate about the world outside of their borders. I’d listen as she told me of how their every move made her wonder what it would be like to see these magnificent creatures in person. This soon unleashed a feeling inside that captured my thoughts for a few months as I was inspired to wr...
